Background

The UN Forum on Business and Human Rights is the world’s biggest meeting on business and human rights with thousands of participants from relevant stakeholder groups: Governmental and Intergovernmental Organizations, UN network, states, businesses, civil society organizations, national human rights institutions, academia and media

The Forum was established in 2011 by the UN Human Rights Council with the purpose to serve as a global platform for stakeholders to

”discuss trends and challenges in the implementation of the Guiding Principles and promote dialogue and cooperation on issues linked to business and human rights, including challenges faced in particular sectors, operational environments or in relation to specific rights or groups, as well as identifying good practices.”

The Forum is guided and chaired by the Working Group on Business and Human Rights, as per Human Rights Council resolutions 17/4 and 35/7.

The participants, take part in several panel discussions related to Business and Human Rights related issues under the guidance of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights  (the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework).

Theme 2020

Inspired also by the COVID-19 global pandemic and the importance of the State and business respect for human rights to build resilience and achieve recovery, this year’s main Theme is:

“Preventing business-related human rights abuses: The key to a sustainable future for people and planet”.

The topic emphasizes the importance of the prevention of Business-related human rights negative impacts and the mitigation of human rights related risks.

According to the Forum Agenda, sharing best practices, learning from past experiences and identifying and addressing systemic gaps are some of the key ways that should be used to enable and strengthen the prevention of Business related human rights abuses. As the main topic of the Forum also suggests, only when the prevention of human rights abuses is enabled, people and planet to will be able to enjoy a sustainable future.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is decided that this year’s Forum will be held virtually.
